MVP Guidelines

Try On

  •  When you go to the store you can try on different clothes. We can also try on other people's ideas, feelings, world views and ways of doing things.
  • We can “try on” new things to see if we like them or not. Just because you try it, does not mean you have to do it forever.

It's OK to disagree, it's not OK to attack, shame, blame others or yourself

  • We can notice what we have in common and recognize, understand and appreciate what is different between us.
  • When we attack, shame, or blame ourselves and others, we are less likely to take in (listen) to what others are sharing and less likely to problem-solve across our differences.

Practice Self-Focus

  • Don't assume that everyone has the same opinion as you
  • Using “I”, rather than “we”, or “you” statements.
  • When we find ourselves getting irritated with someone about   cultural differences, we can blame/ shame them or ourselves, or we can figure out internally what is causing our irritation by using the feelings wheel.

Practice Both/And Thinking

  • Invites us to see that more than one reality or perspective can be true at the same time rather than seeing reality as strictly either/or, right or wrong, good or bad, this or that.
  • Avoid using the word "but"
  • Example: "I love Cameron, but she's always late".
  • Example: I can be both joyful and sad at the same time.

Notice both the Process & Content

  • Means notice both, “what we say”, “how “and “why” we say or do something and how the members of the group react.
  • For example, notice who's active and who's not, who's comfortable and who's not, who's interested and who's not, including ourselves.
  • Take space (for yourself) and make space (for others).

Be aware of both the intent/impact of your actions

  • Invites us to consider that our intent might not match our impact.
  • This guideline asks us to receive honest feedback about the impact of our words and actions on others. It is possible to be well intentioned AND still say and do hurtful things.
  • Example: Saying a compliment that is received as an insult.

Confidentiality

  • Invites us to honor personal sharing and to not repeat personal details outside of the group.
  • If you want to share a story you heard (that's not yours) make sure to ask that person's permission. If they say no, you can't share their story.
  • If a minor shares that they are being abused in any way. It will have to be reported.
